Rosacea is a very common skin condition. Patients exhibit redness and flushing. Not only is rosacea uncomfortable, but it can be socially stigmatizing as the excessive vascularity can be perceived (incorrectly) as stemming from alcohol abuse. Rosacea often afflicts those of Celtic or Scandinavian descent, although anyone can develop this problem. The condition is exacerbated by triggers, of which the most common are sun, wind, extremes of temperature, high blood temperature, spicy foods, and alcohol. The condition can be worsened by well-meaning practitioners using microderm and chemical peels as well as high doses of steroids, Retin-A or Accutane.

We see rosacea most often on the face, although it is not uncommon on the neck and chest (where there is a common type called Poikiloderma of Civatte). In addition to the common redness and flushing, patients can also develop enlarged/visible blood vessels, eye inflammation and textural skin changes such as bumpiness. In a worst case a patient will progressively develop severe thickening and enlargement of the nose (rhinophyma) as was seen in the actor W.C. Fields.

For some patients rosacea can be improved by the use of prescription creams and lotions. Everyone with this condition can benefit from specialized BBL and laser treatments which shut down the abnormal vessels, smooth out the texture and tighten the enlarged pores. Dr. Gelber personally suffers from rosacea and as such has intensely researched what treatment options are available and what is most effective.
